Times they are a’changing…

… and that’s when I discovered Bluesky

It’s been a while since I last posted here… Meanwhile, a lot has changed in the wonderful world of social media. Or maybe not, as the more sinister aspects of the rancid “X” and the tracking and algorithm driven “Facebook”, and other toys of the online oligarchy have become evident and have evolved into tools of alt-right dissemination and control.

I never really got into Twitter. That is, apart from a spell when I upset a few people who failed to understand the concept of “fair comment” while dealing out plenty of lies, damned lies, and disinformation themselves. But that’s enough about the great and the good…

I’m sure they can’t wait to tell you all about it, which they can in the UTL comments section.

So, having for the most part missed out on the absorbing charm of Musk’s media machine, I discovered BlueSky. I’ve been on that platform for over a year now. During that time, it’s grown from a chatroom for nerds to a fully formed app with over 30million users.

Bluesky

Its USP is that there is no algorithm set by an alt-right supporting, billionaire, apartheid nepo-baby to sit itself on your timeline whether you like it or not. Everything you see in your timeline is based on your posts, your follows and your likes. You can also filter using your settings. If you’re looking for people with a particular interest, try a “Starter Pack”.

At first, things can seem a bit slow. If so, try this:

  • Follow people you think you like in the Discover feed. If you find later on they’re a bit of a jerk, you can always Unfollow them
  • Check out the followers and followings of the people you have followed and like those who also seem okay
  • If there is stuff you don’t want to see at all check out your Moderation Settings
  • Check out FEEDS to find posts on particular issues, topics localities, etc

Be seeing you…
